Jan Hartke
Consultant, Clinton Climate Initiative
Jan Hartke joined the Clinton Climate Initiative in August 2006. He has worked on global environmental issues, including climate change, for twenty-five years. He has served as President of the Global Tomorrow Coalition, Executive-Director of EarthVoice, and on the Board of Directors of a wide variety of organizations, including the Enterprise for the Americas as an appointee of President Clinton. Prior to working in the NGO movement, Hartke served as the elected State Treasurer of New Mexico, Chief Public Defender for the State, and Director of the Governor’s Washington D.C. Office. He received his law degree from the University of Virginia and his degree in international relations from Brown University.
Michael Hastings, Lord of Scarisbrick CBE
International Director, Corporate Citizenship, KPMG LLP
Michael Hastings is the International Director for Corporate Citizenship with KPMG. Previously, he was the BBC’s first Head of Corporate Social Responsibility delivering policy leadership for BBC’s community impact work.
He is Chairman of Crime Concern having been a founding Trustee in 1988. With a passion for criminal justice solutions, he was a recent communications and strategy adviser to Lord John Stevens QPM, the former Metropolitan Police Commissioner, and is a founding member of the Metropolitan Police Advisory Committee. He was also a former Commissioner (1993–2001) with the Commission for Racial Equality, advising on race relations in the United Kingdom. Michael was also founding Chairman of Childnet International & SpringBoard for Children, where he is a Patron, and served on the U.K. Government’s Social Security Advisory Committee delivering policy direction on welfare.
Previously, Michael headed up the BBC’s Political and Public Affairs department in Westminster, where he developed the BBC’s Community Affairs function. He started his career in education and community initiatives having graduated in Theology and Education in 1980.
In January 2003, Michael was awarded the honor of a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in recognition of his services to crime reduction. He has successfully completed business education programs at Wharton and Columbia business schools in the U.S.A. In July 2005, Michael was awarded the honor of an independent cross bench peerage to the House of Lords, assuming his seat on December 6, 2005. Also in 2005, Michael received the UNICEF award from the U.K. Chancellor Gordon Brown MP and Lord David Puttnam, Chairman of UNICEF, for his “outstanding contribution to understanding and effecting solutions for Africa’s children.”
John Hofmeister
President, Shell Oil Company
John Hofmeister was named President of Houston-based Shell Oil Company in March 2005. In this position, he heads the U.S. Country Leadership Team, which includes the leaders of all Shell businesses in the U.S. Hofmeister was previously Group Human Resource Director of the Shell Group, based in The Hague, The Netherlands.
Prior to joining Shell in 1997, Hofmeister served as Vice President, International Human Resources, for AlliedSignal (now Honeywell International). From 1988 to 1992, Hofmeister was employed with Northern Telecom, where he became Vice President of Human Resources in 1990. Hofmeister began his career in 1973 in the General Electric Lighting Business. During his 15-year career with GE, he held a variety of marketing, manufacturing, and human resources roles in the locomotives, telecommunications, factory automation, and electric motors businesses.
Hofmeister earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science from Kansas State University. He is a member of the Department of Energy’s new Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technical Advisory Committee and a member of the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and the Policy Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. In addition, he serves on the boards of the Foreign Policy Association, United States Energy Association, National Association of Manufacturers, National Urban League, and he chairs the Resource Development Committee of Jobs for America’s Graduates. Hofmeister is a Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources and the 2007 Chairman of Greater Houston Partnership. In May 2007, he became Chairman of the National Urban League.
Steve Howard
CEO, The Climate Group
Steve is the CEO of The Climate Group which he co-founded in late 2003. He is also a founding member of HSBC’s Carbon Management Task Force. Prior to his role with The Climate Group, Steve was a Partner in ERM where he led the work on Corporate Social Responsibility for clients as diverse as Kingfisher and ABN Amro and on climate change related projects for a range of organizations including EDF Energy, BP, WWF and The World Bank. Previously he was the founding Director of the Global Forest and Trade Network for WWF International, where he led an international team involved in advising 700 companies on forest and supply chain issues. He was also Chairman of the U.K. Forest Stewardship Council where he helped achieve a far-reaching consensus on a national forest certification standard. Steve was founding Chairman of the Tropical Forest Trust from 1999 to 2004, which he helped establish to respond to the need for ethically sourced tropical timber.
He has a first class honours degree in ecology and a Ph.D. in environmental physics based on work as a Senior Fellow at the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry in Kenya. In December 2005, he was named by Scientific American magazine as a Policy Leader within the “Scientific American 50.”
Shintaro Ishihara
Governor of Tokyo
Ishihara was elected Governor of Tokyo in 1999 and re-elected in 2003. Ishihara entered the Diet in 1987 first as a member of the upper house, then as a member of the lower house.
Born in 1932 in Hyogo Prefecture, Ishihara initially came to prominence as an author, taking the Akutagawa Prize at 23 for his novel Season of the Sun in 1956. Ishihara worked a journalist for the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, reporting from Vietnam. He earned a law degree from Hitotshubashi University. Governor Shintaro has four sons.
Nobuhiko Ito
President & CEO, GE Japan, Ltd.
Nobuhiko was named President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), General Electric Japan, Ltd. in February 2005. Prior to this job, Mr. Ito was President & CEO, GE Capital Leasing Corporation since January 2004.
Mr. Ito joined General Electric Japan, Ltd. in 1989. He moved to GE Yokogawa Medical System, Ltd. in 1991 as General Manager, X-Ray Business, and Director and General Manager, Marketing Division in 1993. In September 1993, Mr. Ito was appointed as Director and General Manager, Marketing of GE Medical Systems Asia and then General Manager, Global MR of GE Medical Systems in 1994. He was named Director and General Manager, Sales of GE Yokogawa Medical System, Ltd. in 1996, followed by Managing Director and General Manager, Sales in 1997, and President & COO in 1999. From 2002 to 2003, Mr. Ito was President & CEO, GE Edison Life Insurance.
Prior to joining GE, Mr. Ito was with Exxon Kagaku Japan and Exxon Chemical Asia Pacific for 16 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Fuel Engineering from the University of Tokyo and an M.B.A. from Cornell University.
Gilberto Kassab
Mayor of São Paulo
Gilberto Kassab is the Mayor of São Paulo. In addition, Kassab is State Vice-President of the Paulista division of the Democratic Party (ex-Liberal Front Party–PFL) and National Secretary of the Party. He is a key political leader in science and technology, and a reference on energy issues. From 1998-2004, Kassab carried out a second mandate as federal Congressman, a position he renounced in order to become Vice Mayor of São Paulo and collaborate with Mayor José Serra. Before reaching the National Congress, Kassab was a City Councilor in the city of São Paulo (1993–1994) and a State Congressman (1995–1998). As a National Congressman, Gilberto Kassab was appointed by the Chamber of Deputies to hold a place in the Consultative Council of Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency).
Besides his political activities, Gilberto Kassab participates actively in several civil society institutions. He is Vice-President of the Commercial Association of São Paulo; Vice-President of the Federation of Commercial Associations of the State of São Paulo; Advisor to CRECI (Regional Council of Real Estate Brokers); Director of the Real Estate Brokers’ Trade Union; and Director of the Center of Commerce of the State of São Paulo.
Gilberto Kassab is the fifth of seven children of Doctor Pedro Salomão José Kassab and teacher Yacy Kassab. Born in São Paulo on August 12th, 1960, he completed his studies at the Liceu Pasteur. He went on to pursue two degrees at the University of São Paulo: Civil Engineering in 1985 and Economics in 1986.
Klaus Kleinfeld
President & CEO, Siemens AG
Klaus Kleinfeld, 49, became President and Chief Executive Officer of Siemens AG on January 27, 2005—the 11th company head in Siemens’ 159-year history. Prior to becoming CEO, he was on the Corporate Executive Committee since January 2004, and had responsibility for Siemens’ Information and Communications business as well as for its regional companies in Africa, the Middle East and the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Klaus led the company’s U.S.A. region as President and Chief Executive Officer from 2002 to the end of 2003. Prior to that, from 2001, he was the Chief Operating Officer. Prior to his U.S. assignment, he was Executive Vice President and a member of the Executive Board of the Siemens AG Medical Engineering Group, leading the $1 billion worldwide Angiography, Fluoroscopy and X-Ray Systems business. Earlier, Klaus established and led the Siemens Management Consulting Group. Klaus began his career with Siemens in 1987 in the Corporate Sales and Marketing group, moving in 1988 to Siemens Corporate Planning and Strategy. Prior to joining Siemens, he was a strategic product manager at the CIBA-GEIGY Pharmaceuticals Division in Basel, Switzerland.
He earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration/Economics from the University of Goettingen (Germany) in 1982, followed by a Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the University of Wuerzburg (Germany) in 1992. Klaus is a member of the Board of Directors of Alcoa Inc., Bayer AG, and Citi. He also serves as a director of the New York Metropolitan Opera and the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum. Klaus is a marathon runner who also enjoys skiing, tennis and the arts. He is married and has two daughters.
Apirak Kosayodhin
Governor of Bangkok
Mr. Apirak Kosayodhin was elected Governor of Bangkok in 2002. Prior to his election, Mr. Kosayhodhin occupied many high level management positions for global firms including Pepsi-Cola Trading Co, Ltd., Frito-Lay Thailand, and Pizza Hut Co. Ltd. Apirak was President & CEO of GMM Grammy Public Co., Ltd. from1994 to 2000 and became the President of the Marketing Association of Thailand from 2002 to 2004. He has also been Board of Director of The Stock Exchange of Thailand, Director of the United Broadcasting Corporation Public Co., Ltd. and Co-Chief Executive Officer, TA Orange Co., Ltd.
Mr. Kosayodhin earned a Bachelor of Science in Food Science & Technology from Chiang Mai University in 1983, an M.B.A. from the National Institute of Development Administration and an Advanced Management Program degree from Harvard. Mr. Kosayodhin was born March 30, 1961, is married to Mrs. Patima Kosayodhin, and has one son.
Ken Livingstone
Mayor of London
Ken Livingstone was elected to the position of Mayor of London in 2000 as an independent candidate. He was readmitted to the Labour party in 2004, shortly before re-election as Mayor for a second term. As Mayor he introduced the successful London congestion charge and led a rejuvenation of public transport. He has made tackling climate change a priority and recently published a comprehensive Climate Change Action Plan for London.
Ken Livingstone was born in Lambeth in 1945 and educated at Tulse Hill Comprehensive School. After eight years working as a technician at the Chester Beatty Cancer Research Institute in London, he entered local government and was elected leader of the Greater London Council (GLC) in 1981. He remained Leader until March 1986 when Margaret Thatcher abolished the GLC. From 1987 to June 2001, he served as Labour Member of Parliament for Brent East. He was elected as member of the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party between 1987 and 1989, and from 1997 to 1998.
Emily Lloyd
Commissioner, New York City Department of Environmental Protection
Commissioner Lloyd was appointed by Mayor Bloomberg to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in February 2005. DEP is responsible for managing New York City’s drinking water supply and distribution and wastewater collection and treatment systems; carrying out Federal Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act regulations; handling hazardous materials emergencies and toxic site remediation; overseeing asbestos monitoring and removal; enforcing the City’s air and noise codes; billing and collecting for 800,000 water/sewer accounts; and managing City-wide conservation programs. DEP is one of the City’s largest agencies and protects 2,000 square miles of watershed land in the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River Valley.
Prior to joining DEP, Commissioner Lloyd served as Executive Vice President for Administration for Columbia University for ten years, and then as Executive Vice President for Government and Community Affairs. Earlier, she was Commissioner for Sanitation under Mayor Dinkins, Director of Business Development at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Commissioner for Traffic and Parking for the City of Boston.
She is a graduate of Wellesley College, received a Masters of City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania and was a Loeb Fellow at Harvard University. She has served on numerous boards and commissions and is a lifetime Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration.
Luis Castañeda Lossio
Mayor of Lima
Luis Castañeda Lossio was first elected the Mayor of Lima in 2002, and was re-elected Mayor for the period of 2004–2007. As Mayor of Lima he has completed several projects to embellish the city, recovering its historical, cultural, artistic and natural inheritance. He also created Solidarity Hospitals, aimed at helping very poor people.
Before he was elected mayor, he was counselor of Lima Municipality and creator of EMAPE, an institution responsible for public transportation in Lima. In addition, he is vice president of UCCI (Capitals Iberoamericans Cities of Union – Andes Zone). He was also executive president of the Social Security Peruvian Institute, and a director of many public and private companies, including: COFIDE, EMMSA, ENATA, ESMIL, ENACO, and the Industrial Bank of Peru.
Luis Castañeda has been awarded the “Order of the Big Cross” from the Federative Republic of Brazil, the “Al Wissan Al Alaoui” award from the King of Morocco, and the Keys to the Cities of Miami, U.S.A.; Taipei, Taiwan; and Bogotá, Colombia. He is a lawyer, graduated from Peruvian Catholic University. He received a Master’s degree from the Military Studies Center of Peru, and has completed specialized courses in Mexico and Sweden.
Terry J. Lundgren
Chairman, President & CEO, Federated Department Stores
Terry Lundgren assumed the title of Chairman, President & CEO of Federated Department Stores, Inc. on January 15, 2004. Prior to this, he served as President & Chief Operating Officer, a title he assumed in March 2003 after having served as President & Chief Merchandising Officer since May 1997. Federated is the parent company of Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, and is a premier national retailer with more than 900 department stores in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.
Lundgren began his retailing career in 1975 with Bullock’s, a Los Angeles-based division of Federated. He was named Senior Vice President and General Merchandising Manager of Bullock’s in 1984. In 1987, he was named C.E.O. of Bullock’s Wilshire. Lundgren left Federated after its acquisition by Campeau in 1988, joining Neiman Marcus, where he served as Executive Vice President and shortly thereafter was named Chairman & CEO. He returned to Federated in April of 1994 as Chairman & CEO of the Federated Merchandising Group.
Lundgren is a native of Long Beach, California and a graduate of the University of Arizona, from where he was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Lundgren has been appointed Commissioner on Women’s Economic Development by the Mayor of New York. He has been presented with several business recognition awards and currently serves on the boards of Carnegie Hall, Partnership for New York City and United Way of New York City, as well as participating in other charitable and civic efforts. He is also a member of the Young Presidents Organization and serves on the membership committee of the Economic Club of New York. Lundgren has two daughters and resides in New York City with his wife, Tina.
Cesar Maia
Mayor of Rio de Janeiro
Cesar Maia was Mayor of Rio between 1993 and 1996. He was elected again in 2000, and reelected in 2004. Before he first became Mayor, he was twice elected member of the House of Representatives from 1987 through 1993, where he was Vice-President of the House Budget Committee, rapporteur of the House Finance Committee and President of the Mixed Committee regarding Studies on Regional Unbalances. Between 1983 and 1986, Cesar Maia was the Secretary of Finance of the State of Rio de Janeiro, and later President of Diverj (Securities and Exchange Distributor of the State of Rio de Janeiro) and President of the Bank of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Banerj. He taught Macro-economics at the Universidade Federal Fluminense and worked at Klabin Industries from 1974 through 1982.
A “carioca” from Copacabana, the Mayor of the City of Rio de Janeiro was born on June 18, 1945. His parents were both civil servants. He attended elementary school at the Institute of Education and high school at the Colégio Santo Inácio. He studied Engineering in Ouro Preto, state of Minas Gerais. Involved with school politics, he became a student leader at the age of 20, was arrested after the coup d´ état in 1964, and was exiled in Chile from 1969 to 1974. Mr. Maia studied Economics at the University of Chile, ratifying his studies in Rio de Janeiro, at the Bennet Institute.
He is married to Mariangeles Ibarra Maia, and they have twin children, Rodrigo and Daniela.
Amos Masondo
Mayor of Johannesburg
Amos Masondo was appointed the city’s first executive mayor in December 2000, with a simple vision for the city: “A vision where our children play safely in the streets, where our families and friends can live, work and play,” he told Business Day in June 2001.
Born in 1953 and educated in Soweto, Councillor Masondo joined early black consciousness organisations such as the South African Students’ Movement in 1972. He was involved in establishing underground cells in Soweto in 1974, and was imprisoned on Robben Island from 1975–81 for ANC activities. On his release he served as a member of the Soweto Civic Association and as a member of the Committee of Ten. He was a founder member of the United Democratic Front and the first Interim Executive Committee. He joined the General Allied Workers Union in 1981, was a full-time organiser from 1983 to 1985, and served as acting general secretary in 1985. He was detained from June 1985 to March 1986 and again from July 1986–89. He was secretary of the Cosatu Witwatersrand region from 1990–93, and ANC regional election coordinator for the PWV from 1993–94. He was elected an ANC Member of the Provincial Legislature, and served as Gauteng MEC for Health until 1998. He was political adviser to Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa until his appointment as executive mayor in December 2000. Councillor Masondo was a member of the ANC PWV Regional Executive Committee, the Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee, and in 1997 was elected to the ANC National Executive Committee, where he heads the Elections Committee.
Blythe Masters
Global Head of Currencies & Commodities, JPMorgan Chase & Co.
Blythe Masters is the Global Head of Currencies and Commodities at JPMorgan Chase. From 2004–2006, Blythe was the CFO of JPMorgan’s Investment Bank. She was previously the Head of Global Credit Portfolio and Credit Policy and Strategy at JPMorgan, responsible for the management of credit and market risks of the bank’s retained credit positions arising from lending and derivatives activities, the development of credit strategy, policies, infrastructure and limits to measure and control credit risk, and coordinating the financial and risk reporting of the firm’s credit activities. Prior to that, she was Head of North American Structured Credit Products and Co-Head of Asset Backed Securitization at JP Morgan, managing businesses including ABS, Conduit Financing, CLOs, Synthetic Securitization, Credit Hybrids, Insurance and Pension Derivatives, Latin American Structured Finance, Repackaging and Structured Products Risk Management. Prior to this, Blythe was responsible for Global Credit Derivatives Marketing at JP Morgan Securities, Inc. Her responsibilities included structuring and distribution of credit derivative products and related credit risk management strategies, both for JP Morgan and its clients. In 1998–99, Ms. Masters was also Co-Head of North American Credit Portfolio. Blythe joined JP Morgan in 1991.
She is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Friends of the Royal Court Theatre, the National Dance Institute and the NY Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She is a graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, with a BA in economics.
David Miller
Mayor of Toronto
In November 2003, Torontonians chose David Miller as their new mayor. In November 2006 he was re-elected for a second term, with a mandate to make Toronto a city of prosperity, opportunity and liveability for all residents.
Among his many accomplishments as mayor, securing a New Deal for Cities with senior orders of government is one of his proudest, enabling Toronto to garner new powers, money, and respect from provincial and federal governments. Under his leadership Toronto has become the only city in Canada with a direct agreement with the federal government on transit funding. Mayor Miller has also become a dominant voice for the urban agenda. As the City comes into its own, it is reinvesting in Toronto’s neighborhoods through efforts like the Community Safety Plan, the Clean and Beautiful City Initiative, and revitalization of parks, plazas, and the waterfront.
Before running for public office, he was a partner at the Toronto law firm Aird & Berlis, where he specialized in employment and immigration law and shareholder rights. He became a Metro councillor in 1994, and in 1997 he was elected to the new City of Toronto council where he served two terms.
Like Most Torontonians, Mayor Miller immigrated to Toronto. He and his mother arrived from England in 1967, and moved to Toronto in 1981. Mayor Miller received a degree in economics from Harvard University and a law degree from the University of Toronto. He and his wife, lawyer Jill Arthur, are the parents of two children.
Clover Moore
Lord Mayor of Sydney
Lord Mayor and Chair of Central Sydney Planning Committee, Clover Moore MP was elected in March 2004 as the first popularly elected female Lord Mayor of Sydney. She has been State Member for Bligh since 1988. She is currently serving her fifth term in the Legislative Assembly of the NSW Parliament and previously served as a Councillor on Sydney City and South Sydney Councils (1980–1987). Clover is an Independent who has never belonged to a political party. She is committed to a better environment and living amenity, protection of public lands and foreshores, progressive solutions to tough city problems, and political reform.
James Murdoch

James Murdoch was appointed as a Director of British Sky Broadcasting on February 13, 2003 and as Chief Executive Officer in November 2003. Prior to his appointment as CEO, he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Star Group Limited. Mr. Murdoch serves on the Board of Yankee Global Enterprises, the Board of Trustees of the Harvard Lampoon and the Leadership Council of The Climate Group. Mr. Murdoch attended Harvard University.
C. Ray Nagin
Mayor of New Orleans
C. Ray Nagin was elected Mayor of New Orleans in May 2002, becoming the first New Orleans mayor in nearly 60 years to have not held previous elected office. He was re-elected in 2006, defeating twenty-two other candidates. He ran a successful race that had wide scope since most city residents were dispersed throughout the country.
In August 2005, Mayor Nagin ordered the first ever mandatory evacuation hours before Hurricane Katrina, a powerful category five storm that hit New Orleans. He led and managed the largest mass evacuation and largest natural disaster in the nation’s history. In the aftermath of Katrina, Mayor Nagin successfully lobbied Congress and President George W. Bush, securing $6 billion in federal dollars to rebuild and improve the city’s levee protection system, and also worked to secure $19.2 billion in Community Development Block Grants and other financing for the region for housing, infrastructure development, and rebuilding. Within 30 days of Katrina, Mayor Nagin developed the Bring New Orleans Back Commission to develop a master plan for rebuilding and repopulating New Orleans.
Before becoming Mayor, Nagin served as the vice president and general manager for Cox Communications in Southeast Louisiana. Mayor Nagin earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting at Tuskegee University in 1978 and received a Masters of Business Administration at Tulane University in 1994. He is married to Seletha Smith Nagin. They have three children, Jeremy, Jarin and Tianna, and live near Bayou St. John in New Orleans.
